What is Waymap

Waymap is a mobile app providing indoor, outdoor, and underground navigation with step-by-step audio guidance throughout select public transport nodes as part of a trial.

The app is designed specifically for people who are blind or have low vision as the primary use case. It uses universal design principles to support a range of disabilities and be useful for anyone.

Waymap promotes independent travel for blind and visually impaired customers, reducing the need to ask for directions, help or rely on a guide.

The personal navigation app is now available at 15 public transport nodes, providing directions to individual platforms, between stations and/or bus interchanges, to help desks, to specific exits and to any facilities within the public transport node.

How it works

Waymap uses the IMU (inertial measurement unit) sensors already in your smartphone to detect movement with step-level accuracy.

The app collects sensor readings 100 times per second to calculate your step length and direction.

Waymap personalises to your walking style the more you use it. Accuracy improves with every journey.

Your first journey may have minor inaccuracies. The app gets better each time you use it.

Waymap works in two carry modes: phone held naturally in front of you, or placed in a firm front hip pocket. Use headphones for audio instructions when carrying in your pocket.
